How does one shape an idea or a story into an artwork? This interdisciplinary studio course will look at both prevalent and alternative strategies for relating a narrative by analyzing examples in a diverse range of media. Students will learn different concepts for structuring a piece, and will focus on developing a point of view, a voice for their characters and for their project as a whole. We will discuss how aesthetic and media choices affect the nature, delivery and reception of each work. Students will create pieces using a variety of narrative approaches and will take on a longer project in which they choose one concept to address through a variety of media and from multiple perspectives. Works by relevant artists such as Akira Kurosawa, Miranda July, Matthew Goulish, Janet Cardiff, Isaac Julien, Mairsa Olsen, Jeremy Deller, Brody Condon, eteam, and Emily Jacir will be discussed.
