Introducing a Town Centre Manager for Brentford High Street was one of the recommendations of the community vision for Brentford High Street.  Responding to a letter to local councillors from Brentford Community Council and Brentford Chamber of Commerce, on 22 January 2009 Mike Jordan, Director for Environmental Services, LB Hounslow in a presentation to Isleworth and Brentford Local Area Committee:

"...informed members that the Economic Development Unit had now been relocated within the Environmental Services Department and that only one of the two staff posts was currently occupied. The Authority had previously withdrawn Town Centre Manager (TCM) posts in past years. TCMs were normally a business contribution or even led by local businesses. Members acknowledged that there was little prospect of new money in 2009-10 to fund this.

"Officers could see case for a TCM:

  • liaising with the Council over issues affecting traders such as parking, street cleansing, crime, etc.
  • promoting the town centre with local media and event organizers, etc.
  • identifying funding opportunities for the town centre co-ordinating meetings of the town centre partnership.

"Again here the matter was a Boroughwide issue so consideration of such a post would need to consider ability to cover other town centres within the Borough. Members were reminded of the Audit Commission report commissioned, which looked at the future of economic development role in Hounslow. A meeting was scheduled with officers to discuss a draft report on 27 January [2009].

"Councillor Dakers indicated the need to consider resources for a Town Centre Manager and the impact on town centres across the Borough.

"Councillor Carey referred to the appointment of a Town Centre Manager and the reporting structure proposed. Mike Jordan indicated the need to first source necessary funding and assess how it would function, such as whether it might be best to employ Boroughwide managers and how many to employ. He suggested that members raise this matter at Executive."

In late 2009/ early 2010 it was agreed with cross-party support by the local area committee (and then the Executive of the Council) that Tescos S106 money should be used to appoint a Town Centre Manager on a two year contract. 2.5 days a week of their time will be allocated to Brentford.  In April/ May 2010 work is ongoing on finalising the Job Description for the role.
