Compost Resource Guide

for FortGreene, Brooklyn and the Surrounding Communities

Community members have volunteered to bring you this list and reduce waste in NYC. Most sites listed below accept food waste for composting year round. Many sites also create finished compost for public use. Please Contact Roy or Amanda at http://www.openplans.org/projects/compost/ for more info, to update us on sites and/or to contribute to the project. When dropping off your food waste, please refer to the list of acceptable materials on the back of this sheet!

1. Compost at the Fort Greene Farmers Market! Organic waste can be dropped off at the Fort Greene Farmers Market, Corner of Dekalb & Washington Park, every Saturday between the hours of 9 am and 3 pm. There are labeled pails with lids and you are asked to dump waste but do not put any trash or plastic bags in the pail. The waste is brought to one of the four local gardens listed below (#2-5). 2. Greene Acres Community Garden: Corner of Franklin and Greene Avenues. Greene Acres accepts food waste throughout the year. Open hours are posted on the gate. Compost membership to the garden can purchased for $5 and compost member get a key to compost their waste any time. Contact Amanda at 718. 783.5984 http://greeneacres.interactivist.net

3. Brooklyn Bears Carlton Avenue Community Garden: Carlton Avenue between Greene and Fulton. Carton Avenue garden accepts food waste during posted open hours. For more information contact Roy at openplans.org/projects/compost/

4. Hollenback Community Garden: Washington Avenue between Gates and Greene. Hollenback promotes waste reduction through a compost program that welcomes household kitchen waste incorporating local landscaping and local brewery waste as well. Food waste can be dropped off during posted open hours. At all other times, food waste may be placed in the marked metal can, through the front fence. 5. Prospect Heights Community Farm: 252 St. Marks Avenue between Underhill and Vanderbuilt. Non-garden members can drop off food waste during posted open hours. For more info contact John Pulp at 917.613.9472

6. St. Mark’s Prospect Heights Community Garden: St. Mark's Prospect Heights Community Garden is located on the northwest side of St. Mark's Avenue at Vanderbilt Avenue . They accept food waste from neighborhood homes during the garden open hours. The garden is a garden in the Brooklyn Queens Land Trust. 7. Garden of Union Union Street between 4th and 5th Avenue in Park Slope. Garden of Union with the help of Open Road of NY has upgraded their system to process neighborhood waste and much of the Park Slope Food COOP's waste. Food waste drop off is available to garden members. Saturday mornings are a good time to learn about the compost system: contact Claudia, permie@earthlink.net or pick up a brochure from the gate. Please do not leave compost outside the gate for any reason.

8. 6/15 Green Community Garden  Sixth Avenue and Fifteenth St in Park Slope. The 6/15 GreenCommunityGarden offers a composting membership for composters interested in having the freedom to drop off anytime as well as working with the garden and composting program. There is a $10 membership fee which helps pay for insurance, compost bin maintenance and development of composting outreach, demonstrations, and on-site visits. 9. Red Hook Community Farm
580 Columbia St.at Sigourney. Compost members can drop off their food scraps during open farm hours from March to November. Green compost buckets are available for a donation of $4 -$7. Join us as member to learn more about the role of compost in a sustainable food system! For more info call the Added Value office at 718.855.5531

10. Union Square Farmers Market
Work in Manhattan? You can bring food waste to the farmers market Mon, Wed, Fri and Saturdays for drop off on the east side of the market, a service provided by the Lower East Ecology Center. They also sell compost bins and hold workshops. http://www.lesecologycenter.org/
