I'll be arriving in New York tomorrow at 10:45, at 34th/8th, from Bolt Bus. Once I do that, I'm assuming I'll be taking the #1 north: Something like http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=34th+and+8th,+NYC&daddr=535+W+116th+St,+New+York,+NY+10027+(Columbia+University)&hl=en&geocode=%3BFU-rbgId5W2X-yEKHvnPHpPDQw&mra=cc&dirflg=r&sll=40.780151,-73.983479&sspn=0.067853,0.103512&ie=UTF8&z=13&start=0 Is this right? Once I'm at Columbia, where do I go / how do I get in, etc.? I'll be staying overnight, and leaving on a 6:30 bus on Sunday, so I'll also be around on Sunday. I see now that the http://www.openplans.org/projects/nyc-open-mapping-sprint/project-home page has better directions, including room numbers. So, I think I can read that and figure it out; sorry for the noise! Regards, -- Christopher Schmidt MetaCarta

hey all... I know this was a small list, but want to thank everyone who came... next time we'll hopefully have a bit more lead time. I know the columbia folks loved it, and I sure had a great time talking to everyone and seeing what they were up to. anyhoo, I learned alot, and am interested in what you guys think would improve the next time we do this. some things that come to my mind:: * at least one social event connected to the sprint itself for people to get know each other * an agenda including times for introductions, checkins and a sum up * better tracking of who was coming and what they wanted to work on so folks would know who to talk to. - pictures?? - list of names and affiliations or current projects * a developer driven round of demos and/or lightening talks * having it sometime that is not immediately after opengeofest (felt like we lost important personnel and attention due to having too much going on this past week) And finally, not arranging any sort of formal postmortem of what got down, what got planned, what the next actions for awesomeness are! I think we can do that perhaps here, or privately, but it's nice to preserve the outcomes of what was (in my mind) a very inspiring event. so thanks again! and let me know your thoughts. -w On Fri, Feb 27, 2009 at 6:28 AM, Christopher Schmidt <crschmidt@...> wrote: > On Fri, Feb 27, 2009 at 07:22:54AM -0500, Christopher Schmidt wrote: >> I'll be arriving in New York tomorrow at 10:45, at 34th/8th, from Bolt >> Bus. >> >> Once I do that, I'm assuming I'll be taking the #1 north: Something like >> http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=34th+and+8th,+NYC&daddr=535+W+116th+St,+New+York,+NY+10027+(Columbia+University)&hl=en&geocode=%3BFU-rbgId5W2X-yEKHvnPHpPDQw&mra=cc&dirflg=r&sll=40.780151,-73.983479&sspn=0.067853,0.103512&ie=UTF8&z=13&start=0 >> >> Is this right? A lot of people probably come with an agenda, and know exactly what they want to work on, but I think it might also be nice to have a "structured track", like a to-do list of a dozen or two fairly self-contained bugs or new dev problems from a couple of different areas that total n00bs could work on singly or in small groups. (If it's possible to assemble such a list.) This is somewhat counter to the idea of a sprint, I think, but a little hand-holding can go a long way into getting people involved in the project. Documentation and testing are two areas that usually are pretty easy to contribute too. every group that sprints has a slightly different culture towards it, and at sprint with multiple projects, it's worth establish some basic ground rules for interaction. I don't think that is hand holding, just good sense. -w -- <=> david "whit" morriss OpenGeo -- http://opengeo.org "If you don't know where you are, you don't know anything at all" Dr. Edgar Spencer, Ph.D., 1995
