Geo Streetswiki
General Location for SW content
cholme's primary ideas were around geolocating pages (sw content "type") and possibly attachments (images, etc).
- this requires ways to geolocate content (ui etc)
- geolocation by text (address, etc)
- users adding geometries to describe points, lines, or areas
- a way to display located content (how and where would we view maps)
- a thumbnail map on the page to show "where" the page was or geometries associated with the page
- possibly maps of aggregations of pages based on something else (category?backlinks?etc
- filtering map results by search parameters or searching by a geographic area
- display of located images or other attachments
- how do we represent the page content on the map?
- KML views to allow SW content to show up in google maps and google earth, etc
Locating categories via custom placemark icons
My feeling is that allowing users to pick representation markers for point geometries would encourage folks to use the map as a way to categorize content (so, add a person to a map vs. add a point for a page representing a person).
User maps
- Users could also locate themselves ("my neighborhood, my park, my street that I care about, my place of business")
- we could generate maps from located content for users
Wikizing Maps (more out there, but more cool I think)
If we have custom icons, it's more likely users may wish to add content to a map before a page is available for it. A narrative example:
I want to add a memorial to florent to the map for the meat packing district page. No page for florent exists yet, but the restaurant icon I add can be used to add a page for florent.
another usecase, a person creating a central wiki page might prefer to organize their pages by the map, rather than in text:
I am starting a page on pedestrian deaths in Lower Manhattan. Some incidents I know about and may link to from the page itself, but others I'd like to encourage others to fill out. I also want to focus my page on the problem rather than making it a list of links.
Adding a Map Button to Xinha
Really, folks should be able to choose how and whether their map is exposed on the wiki page and maybe some basic styling (collapsable, thumbnail or full size, what controls?).
