Hello, Some news about the project. I have written a proposal document (currently in draft state) that I would like to complete in the coming days and then send to potential sponsors so we get sure that we can move forward. If anyone is interested in reviewing it, please let me know and I will send it to you by private mail. If anyone know someone within an organization that would want to sponsor the project, let me know too. As of today, we have Morocco, Malawi, and South Africa where we have discussions going on for being part of the tour. This is good news. If we have 2 or 3 more countries, it makes the project valid at least for the first year. My plan is that we should have 1 country/training event per quarter. And it might make sense to group some countries to have a single event per region. As always, suggestions/ideas are welcome. Cheers, Kamon

Dear Sir, It is timely to read this from you. I am Mr. Joel Gogwim from university of Jos, Nigeria. I got to know about this tour while i was in Morroco for Africa Nework Operators Group(AfNOG) workshop around May/June 2008. I was touched by the presenter of the tour. Why? because it was a student that presented, so from then I promised myself that I must ensure that my students and the university have to participate. I did sent mail to the Morrocan students for next step to take but I am yet to receive a response. Lastly I wish to review the proposal and promised you that my university want to participate. And I will appreciate if there are other things we need to do to be member(s) then let me know. Cheers, Joel Gogwim. Hello Joel, Good to hear you are interested. Aida, the student from Morocco you're mentioning informed me about that. I am going to send you the proposal draft, as well as to the guy from Malawi who also contacted me, so we all can make sure that we are on the same track regarding how to organize things. The other thing interested universities can do is inform us of the period when a training event can happen in your place (speaking of 2009 here), and see with us how we can start planning it. Best regards, Kamon Python/Plone developer & trainer

Hi Kamon, Please my regard to Aida, she was quite hospital and ready to share. For my school I may say we have no knowledge about python programming so we shall appreciate having experts to come and train us. Scheduling the training my university will not be a problem next. My handicap is the facilitators but participants we shall have more than enough. Another thing is what are the requirements for the training? I mean: 1. Systems - hard & soft 2. Pre-knowledge of participants 3. other Equipments/facilities needed When we start, get other universities in Nigeria will be very easy. I can also invites them to participates. We have over 30 universities here. By November 2008, we are having ngNOG (Nigerian version of AfNOG) so I will equally appreciate if you can help me with presentations that I could offer to colleagues during the meeting sessions to gain more participating institutions here in Nigeria. It would be nice to group people coming from diverse universities so the logistics are easy to organize, and have not more than 2 training events per year and per country. The reason for that is we don't yet have resources and I suspect our Python experts/volunteers have a busy agenda. Regards, Kamon

Hi Kamon, Please would be able to help me with any presentation materials on the Python Africa Tour to enable me use it as means of reaching other institutions? We shall have a workshop very soon that a lot of organizations will participates so it will be a good time for me to preach this gospel to my fellow Nigerians. Thank you. Yes, of course. This is something important to do. On the top of my head, our gospel ideas are: - Using training to introduce young people to a new language that has been powering users in the world for more than 10-15 years now, which is Open Source, with a friendly community, and much much more. - Doing that in a way that can bypass the usual inertia we see in some of our countries, and also with an economic model inspired by Open Source itself (sponsoring, contributing, etc) I am available to help you. I can send you some slides if you want, and you would just adapt them to your taste. My best, -- Kamon

Hi Aida, Thank you very much I shall keep you posted and link you with my participating students. How is Morroco? I am sure very cool. We did enjoy being there during our workshop. People like you make life really good and cool for us. I hope to see you other days again. By God grace I shall be in Egypt next year for the same workshop. Have a nice day. Hello everyone, I've been blogging on our ideas lately, so it's "on air" and on the Python planet: http://www.openplans.org/projects/python-african-tour/blog/ We also need to start thinking about dates. In my mind, we should map the program with the year (4 trainings per year), 2009 in this case, so let say for example: january, april, july, november. Now here are the facts: 1) Currently interested countries that have contacted me are: Morocco, Malawi, Nigeria. That does not mean the first trainings will be organized there, but only that we are trying to find ways to make it happen. 2) Morocco actually proposes December 18-19-20 this year (2008). If we can find a volunteer, sponsors, and agree on the organization details, why not ? 3) We have to pay attention to several Open Source events where some of us are involved. So the best would be for interested volunteer trainers to step up and say if they are candidate for these possible trainings, so we can see how things match. Send me a note with the name of the country you are interested in, and the dates when you can be available. After this step, we will be able to plan and add this planning information to our proposal for sponsors. Best regards, Kamon PS: To Joel: I will work on the slides and send them to you this week.

Btw, I forgot about South Africa, as another candidate. I had some contacts there, to be confirmed. And I guess we will have volunteers already in the country. -- Kamon

Hi there, We need to make a decision about the 1st country we visit. If it's Morocco, the school that will host the training is proposing December 18-19-20, 2008. So, who is volunteer for leading the training there ? Once we know when and who is going, it will be easier to move on organizing things. Best regards, Kamon

Hello, Mr Elkafil, Glad to hear from you and your motivation for the project. Let me express my view on how I see things and then people could agree or propose alternate ideas/solutions. I think it is a good idea to keep the general training/workshop on the first 2 days. Aida and me agreed on that already. Then a 3rd day (or 4th day) could be used for an unconference or a "learning doing stuff" sprint with topics to be decided together. So, OpenERP could be one topic. So first question is: Are you interested by 1 or 2 days used that way, in a free spirit rather than formal training ? From what you are saying, I guess you would need at least 1 day just for your topic. But maybe, we need to plit it in 2: a first day to talk specifically about interaction with databases, then a 2nd day on how openerp uses all these. Now, the important thing is how we organize this so it has a good impact for the project. For me, this falls into the scope of sponsors. I mean if NEXTMA is a sponsor of the project: - They can be featured in a region where the tour is stopping, in this case Morocco. - They can have a slot (1 or 2 days to be decided) where they can propose topics that are important for them. It is exactly what I would like us to have for "post-training/mentoring activities". Depending on the type of sponsoring they could actually be the company/organization that sends the volunteer trainers. Regarding all the sponsoring issue, my plan is to propose the sponsoring levels details today or tomorrow, so we will have something more concrete to discuss on. Also, I am thinking we should have something special to attract sponsors, such as: "The first 3 sponsors supporting the project will gain a special mention (or special benefit)..." since they would have been the supporters that helped launch the tour. Cheers, Kamon

The task: Just the normal Python introduction (2 days) training, followed by an unconference where the people will continue learning, possibly OpenERP. Well, we are still thinking about the topics. For the training, we need to go with a CD with all needed software and documentation on it, and it will serve as handout for the students. It also means staying there during 4/5 days at least. Note that, if we stick to the 18-20 of december, some people might want to leave right after to be back at home for Christmas. Regards, Kamon
