  Ashtanga Yoga Outreach

We provide Ashtanga Yoga instruction to communities in the New York City area whose lives can be enhanced by the therapeutic benefits that its practice confers.

Why Ashtanga Yoga:

The practice of Ashtanga Yoga, as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of South India (1915-2009) can be taken as a therapeutic supplement to one's daily routine. It promotes health and healing by stimulating and enhancing a variety of physiological and behavioral habits, such as circulation and respiration, digestion and nutrition, regularity of exercise, and kindness and empathy towards ourselves and others. The wide range of psychophysiological conditions that Ashtanga Yoga can help to ameliorate includes: stress and anxiety, PTSD, ADD/ADHD, autoimmune disorders, hypertension, exhaustion, indigestion, insomnia, depression, neuro-degenerative disease, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and many other chronic illnesses.

Origin and Inspiration:

In 1948, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois opened the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, South India, with a view to experiment with the curative and therapeutic effects of Ashtanga Yoga.  From the 1950s up through the end of the 1970s, the bulk of his students were referred to him by their doctors to learn yoga under his guidance in order to address a variety of illnesses from diabetes to heart disease, as well as musculo-skeletal impairments and neuro-degenarative diseases.  The method of yoga that he was using for these people is the same method that he has taught to the thousands of western students that have passed through his doors for the past 40 years, and we endeavor to capture the original spirit of his work by continuing to reach out to a variety of in-need and at-risk communities.

New York City can be seen as a microcosm of our global community in that, despite being one of the most economically prosperous cities in the world, it is also home to millions of people without access to basic medical care and services. We have seen that Ashtanga Yoga can act as a powerful and cost-effective supplement to the existing health and care services that New York City already provides.

AYO has developed out of the collective efforts of a community of Ashtanga Yoga practitioners based at Ashtanga Yoga New York in Manhattan. AYNY was founded in 1993 under the guidance of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and since that time has been involved in bringing Ashtanga Yoga into a variety of communities and cultural institutions. AYO is the formalization of these years of experience as to the power and versatility of this therapeutic practice.
