New York City is divided into 59 administrative districts, each of which has a Community Board to assist with the governance process. This Civic Set-Asides effort seeks to identify the .nyc domain names of civic resources in each community district that should be set-aside to facilitate the creation of a more livable city. These might be names of neighborhoods, parks, civic organizations, etc.

Here's how you can help. Use the Links to Community Districts below to connect to your District, then enter civic resources not already identified. If your community's page has not already been activated (as indicated by green text), you'll first need to activate it by clicking on the red text, which will bring up a fresh page. For guidance on name areas, review the info on the Queens Community District 3 page - see Example CD 3 Queens. You may want to copy and paste it to your fresh page.

Next, on that page, enter neighborhood names, parks, monuments, important squares, gardens, or other geographic spaces, principle streets, historic sites, parades, events, etc. as suggested on the Example CD 3 Queens

If you do not know your Community District, use the neighborhood list at right, or this page, offered by the mayor's office, to help identify it. And if you don't live in the city and want to assist, select a Community District that you know something about and research its civic resources. Finally, if you have a suggestion about a civic name but don't have the time to enter it on the wiki, you can email it to civic-names@connectingnyc.org.

 New Venues for Civic Discourse

Everyone knows the Internet is a wonder of the world, enabling innovation at a pace never before imagines. Here we speculate on ways new civic venues might be created using the .nyc TLD.

We're hopeful that the recently initiated research by Hunter College might shed some light. Think domain names and mashups. What's possible? How do set aside names in this innovation's support?

Civic Names

In civic life there are many spaces that facilitate civic discourse: streets, sidewalks, plazas, parks, schools, etc. Here are a few name-sets that will continue discourse online.
