This page presents a neighborhood collaboration plan that optimizes the RedHook.nyc domain name to create a more livable and workable Red Hook.

    Project Elements

The immediate stimulus for this initiative is the arrival of the .nyc TLD in 2014, and with it the RedHook.nyc domain name. RedHook.nyc provides a foundation for creating a neighborhood-created and governed network. While the descriptions below are largely Internet based, all need to be transported to the mobile world.

The endeavor can be imagined as operating within several layers.

    • Access - Most fundamentally, residents and organizations need access to the Internet: via desktop in the homes, businesses, the library, by wire or wi-fi, on cell phones or pad, and in public locations. Residents also need access to Internet resources such domain names and IP numbers. The project will advocate for universal access to good quality Internet signal. Availability and affordability.
    • Domain Name Guidance - RedHook.nyc domain names will enable residents to find local resources. (See the google.doc for the latest on RedHook.nyc domain names) :
      • The Primary Domain Name - The project will assist with designing the RedHook.nyc web page and the places and resources to which it leads.
      • 2nd vs. 3rd Level Domain Names - It will assist local entities making a "Buy a second level .nyc domain name?" decision.
      • 3rd Level Domain Names - In collaboration with neighborhood residents, it will identify domain names to the left of RedHook.nyc that should be made accessible to the Red Hook neighborhood, for example:
      • Category or "yellow page" names
        • Parks.RedHook.nyc
        • RealEstate.RedHook.nyc
        • Restaurants.RedHook.nyc

(Note: As this list became a bit too long for this wiki, we moved it to a google.doc to facilitate ready access. The latest version will be found there.)

        • Education
              • The initial education effort is a general awareness campaign about the Net's capacity to better individual lives and that of the neighborhood.
              • People need to know how to select domain names, create, host, and operate a website, link to local and social sites, and edit a wiki.
              • Residents need to know the value of their content contributions, and commit them to the neighborhood.
              • The value of local purchasing to creating an economically viable neighborhood to include the introduction of a service more local than craigslist and as trustworthy as Amazon.
              • Training arrangements will be made at the local library and other venues.
        • Content
              • Local - Local events, opportunities, neighborhood memory, information / resources / history / opinions / etc. made available to residents and edited wiki-style. (For insight into this wiki layer see the Red Hook section on the NYCwiki.org.) Local culture and tourism will be developed, with OpenStreetMap on every page.
              • Official information - Information curated by oversight staff on demographics (census data), schools, government services, elected and appointed officials.
        • Communication, Collaboration, and Decision Making - Central to the capacity to improve the neighborhood is an ability to find and connect with everyone and everything. Social software has demonstrated the capacity to connect. Residents need to share common information, strategic directions, and goals. They need to have the digital tools and traditional skills to drive collaboration locally, with city-wide connections. And training to facilitate the use of these systems on the desktop and the cell.
