Nicola Toki has been the Threatened Species Ambassador at NZ Department of Conservation (DOC) since 2015. According to a 2017 profile piece by Kim Newth, published in Avenues Magazine;

"Nicola studied zoology and law at the University of Otago ... Since landing her first job with DOC in 2003, Nicola has also worked for Forest and Bird , TBfree New Zealand and in ecotourism. She contributed to the Television New Zealand wildlife mini series Meet the Locals. Before being appointed to her current role, Nicola managed a living water partnership between DOC and Fonterra in the South Island.
